Sophie Stephens

As a Certified Practicing Speech and Language Pathologist (CPSP) and a member of Speech Pathology Australia, Sophie brings a nuanced approach to her practice, integrating neuroaffirming principles with a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based practice.

Sophie has cultivated expertise in addressing communication challenges throughout the lifespan, from paediatric to geriatric populations, with an additional skill set in swallowing difficulties. Sophie’s professional journey encompasses a breadth of settings, including mainstream schools, special education environments, hospital settings, kindergartens, and the home. This diverse experience has equipped her with a keen insight into the unique needs of each individual.

Sophie is committed to tailoring interventions to ensure a person-centred approach that optimises communication outcomes.

Central to Sophie’s practice is a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating closely with paediatricians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, school-based speech pathologists, teachers, wellbeing coordinators, and support workers. Together, they craft holistic treatment plans that prioritise each person’s individual goals. Sophie values continuous professional development, regularly upskilling and reviewing the evidence base.

Recent professional development has focused on neuroaffirming practice, Gestalt Language Processing, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, and the Hanen It Takes Two To Talk program for late talkers. Clinically, she enjoys supporting early language development whereby a child gains the functional language they need to communicate their needs and wants across all environments, along with supporting social skill development and building a child’s confidence and ability to engage with their peers.

Outside of work, Sophie enjoys exploring the outdoors with her dog, indulging in brunch, and staying active at the gym. These activities enrich her perspective and inspire creativity in her professional endeavours, fostering a holistic approach to healthcare.
